Jailed ex-president Saakashvili says nobody remembers Vice PM appointed by Milošević after his overthrow
“Slobodan Milošević appointed the opposition’s popular leader as vice prime minister, yet nobody seems to remember his name following Milošević’s overthrow. I believe this example should prompt many to reflect,” wrote jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili on Facebook.
Saakashvili pointed out that the opposition in former Yugoslavia failed to win any municipalities in local elections.
“The opposition had a very strong and popular leader who challenged Milošević. This individual convinced opposition parties to participate in municipal elections. Although the opposition lost in all municipalities, Milošević appointed this man as vice prime minister. He accepted and reassured supporters that there was still hope for revolution.
Then Milošević was overthrown, and nobody remembers this man’s name, including me. I only recall that he had a long beard. I think this example should serve as a sobering reminder for many,” he concluded.
