Interior Ministry arrests 121 in major nationwide anti-narcotics operation

Following a series of coordinated intelligence-led operations and investigative actions across the country, officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) have arrested 121 individuals on drug-related charges. This figure includes 59 individuals implicated in various roles within drug distribution networks, as announced during a briefing at the Ministry.

Officials confirmed that those detained include both Georgian nationals and foreign citizens.

“Acting under judicial warrants, police conducted multiple controlled purchases of narcotics, which were covertly captured via audio and video recording.

Additionally, arrests were made of individuals targeted in sting operations where law enforcement intercepted and swapped disguised parcels addressed to them, successfully seizing exceptionally large quantities of illicit substances as material evidence.

Search operations targeting the suspects’ persons, residences, and vehicles, coupled with investigative re-enactments at designated locations, led to the recovery of various types of exceptionally large quantities of narcotics and psychotropic substances prepared for distribution. The seized material evidence includes Methadone, Alpha-PVP, Cocaine, Ketamine, Buprenorphine, Marijuana, cannabis plants, and other substances.

Officers also confiscated packaging materials, electronic scales, and cash believed to be the proceeds of drug trafficking.

The investigation is being conducted under Articles 260, 260 (ter), 260 (quater), 261, and 265 (prima) of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carry penalties of up to 20 years or life imprisonment.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues its uncompromising fight against drug crime. This commitment is reflected in the statistical data from the first six months of this year. During this reporting period, nearly 5,000 individuals were prosecuted on drug charges, including approximately 1,000 implicated in drug trafficking. Compared to the same period last year, the number of individuals prosecuted has increased by 85%.

Furthermore, police units will continue to take the absolute harshest measures permitted by law against anyone involved in drug distribution,’ the Ministry spokesperson concluded during the briefing.
