GYLA Chair to pursue suspension of Transparency Law at ECHR when needed
Nona Kurdovanidze, the chairwoman of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA), announced on social media that they will seek the suspension of the Transparency Law at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) when deemed necessary.
According to Kurdovanidze, the specifics of when and what actions the Georgian Young Lawyers Association will pursue, as well as their overall litigation strategy, will be disclosed at the appropriate time.
“When we challenged the ‘Russian Law’ at the Strasbourg court, there was a concerted effort from the Georgian Dream and propaganda media for approximately a month to claim that our complaint had not actually been submitted. This was a primary topic leading up to the elections.
They demanded, ‘We don’t trust you; show us the document.’ We presented the mailing document; however, it lacked a court signature.
About a month after we submitted the complaint, we received an official confirmation letter from the court indicating that our complaint had been registered.
Subsequently, they questioned why we had not requested a suspension of the law in Strasbourg. This inquiry was also posed during the initial complaint submission, to which we responded that we would seek a suspension when we deemed it appropriate.
Details regarding our requests and dispute strategy will be revealed at the right moment. It seems they are so fearful of this complaint that, despite the discussion not yet commencing, they are already holding press conferences. They know they will lose,” wrote Nona Kurdovanidze.
