Giorgi Margvelashvili:  I support Girgvliani Amendments, but until now we do not have any real document

I support so called Girgvliani Amendments, but until now we do not have any real document that we can talk about,- President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili has said.

He talked about the Memorandum signed between President’s Administration and the Bar Association on Girgvliani Amendments.

According to the president, the phenomenon of the previous government was assessed by the society as violence and systemic crime, and in addition to this political assessment, the legislative act was created on amnesty, but the process has not moved forward.

“In 2012, the Parliament of Georgia established the facts of political persecution and set a list of people who were persecuted on political grounds. Unfortunately, during these years there has not been a significant progress in this regard. We have repeatedly emphasized the necessity of bringing this process to the end, but unfortunately, it has not been decided yet, I will say more, at the stage we have seen a somewhat backward process, when instead of the improvement of the judiciary system, in many cases we received appointments of persons, who caused a sincere concern in the society. In the beginning of this year, the initiative of implementation of Girgvliani amendments has emerged once again and I support it, but until now we do not have any real document that we can talk about, “- Margvelashvili said.

The President’s Administration and the Georgian Bar Association have signed a Memorandum of cooperation on so-called Girgvliani’s amendments. The Memorandum aims to support measures directed to re-examine the cases of lawyers, repressed in 2005-2012, political prisoners or the persons, persecuted on political grounds, to determine rehabilitation circumstances, allowing those persons to restore the violated right to a fair trial.
