Giorgi Gvarakidze: Plea bargains were reached with those who confessed in October 4 case

“In the October 4 case, plea bargains were reached with everyone who admitted their guilt. However, Chakhunashvili refused to confess or show remorse; consequently, the court was left with no choice but to hand down the sentence it did,” Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze has declared.

According to Gvarakidze, securing a plea deal was the primary alternative mechanism to harsher sentencing.

“If the individual admits to the crime they committed and shows genuine remorse, we still have an opportunity at the Court of Appeal. Should they appeal and enter a confession before the appellate court, we have the power to release them that very day and substitute their term with a suspended sentence,” Gvarakidze stated.
