European Union leaders should finally live up to promises made over the past 20 years and pave the way for Western Balkans countries to join the bloc, said the German Chancellor, at the Third European Political Community Summit meeting of the European Political Community at the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, adding that Moldova, Ukraine, and perspectively Georgia should also be on the agenda.

“It’s above all about the EU’s enlargement. We know that it’s our intention to finally accept the Western Balkans countries in the European Union after 20 years of promises. We also have such plans with Moldova, and Ukraine, and perspectively also with Georgia,” said Olaf Scholz.

“The more (EU) commissioners there are, the more you have to think about how this can reasonably work. After all, you can’t just keep enlarging the government (smiles and gestures) by inventing new ministries, so we will have to find a pragmatic solution. For us in Germany, the question of how many seats our large member country has in the European Parliament obviously plays a role,” the German Chancellor concluded.
