German Chancellor says Ukraine, Western Balkans, Moldova, and Georgia should join EU
“We want to advance the accession of Ukraine, but of course also the Western Balkan states, Moldova, and, in the future, Georgia to the European Union,” said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the inauguration of the CoE Summit of Heads of State and Government in Reykjavík.
According to the German Chancellor, Europe has to do its best to enhance democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
He pledged Germany would continue to support Ukraine, saying: “At some point, Russia’s war against Ukraine will end. And one thing is certain: it will not end in a victory for Putin’s imperialism.”
The Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe is underway in Reykjavík on May 16–17, 2023. It is the fourth time in the 74-year history of the organization that the leaders of the member states meet under the auspices of the Council.
