GeoStat: Georgia’s inflation rate calculated under EU methodology stands at 4.9% for August

According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GeoStat), annual inflation calculated using the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) stood at 4.9% in August 2026. This figure is 0.7 percentage points lower than the 5.6% rate calculated under the national methodology.

Under the EU’s HICP methodology, annual percentage changes compared to August 2025 across individual sectors show that transport experienced the highest increase at 15.8%, followed by personal care, social protection, and miscellaneous goods and services at 9.8%, and housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels at 8.5%. Health costs rose by 5.2%, while both alcoholic beverages and tobacco, as well as recreation, sport, and culture, increased by 5.0%. Prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 4.8%, education by 2.5%, insurance and financial services by 2.4%, and restaurants and accommodation services by 2.2%.
Conversely, prices declined in furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance by –1.6%, in clothing and footwear by –2.5%, and in information and communication by –5.6%.

GeoStat began publishing the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices as an additional macroeconomic indicator in 2022 to align with EU statistical standards.
