GeoStat: Fish prices experience sharpest rise in March, increasing by 21.2%
According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GeoStat), the primary driver of annual inflation has been the price fluctuation in food and non-alcoholic beverages. Overall, prices in this category rose by 7.5%, contributing 2.57 percentage points to the annual inflation rate. Notably, fish prices soared by 21.2%, while the cost of fruits and grapes rose by 13.4%. Bread and bakery products saw a 9.6% increase.
Meat and meat products also experienced a 9.6% rise, with oils and fats increasing by 7.7%. Sugar, jam, and other confectionery items became 5.3% more costly, vegetables and herbs by 4.9%, and dairy products, including milk, cheese, and eggs, by 4.5%. Prices for coffee, tea, and cocoa rose by 3.8%, while mineral and spring waters, non-alcoholic beverages, and natural juices increased by 2.1%.
In the transport sector, prices rose by 4.0%, adding 0.49 percentage points to the annual inflation. Transport services became 7.3% more expensive, and the cost of operating personal vehicles rose by 5.7%.
Within miscellaneous goods and services, prices increased by 9.8%, contributing a further 0.48 percentage points to overall inflation. The most significant rises were observed in personal belongings, which soared by 58.1%, alongside increases in insurance (8.5%), personal hygiene products (4.3%), and other related expenses. Prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco also grew by 6.2%, with tobacco products rising by 8.0% and alcoholic drinks by 4.6%.
