Georgia’s Constitutional Court to reconvene on Monday over lawsuit to ban five political parties
The Constitutional Court in Batumi is set to reconvene on Monday, 26 October at 14:00 to continue reviewing the case concerning the constitutionality and potential ban on five political parties. Both sides agreed on the schedule earlier today.
Furthermore, it was suggested that the review of the lawsuit will continue into next week. According to the President of the Constitutional Court, Revaz Nadaraia, if the hearings cannot be concluded within that timeframe, the proceedings may be extended further.
During the three-day hearing, opposition representatives submitted several motions, including a request to refer the party ban lawsuit to Strasbourg for an advisory opinion and to involve the Venice Commission experts. The opposition also sought a one-month adjournment of the trial; however, the court plenum rejected all of their motions.
The Constitutional Court is hearing Georgian Dream’s constitutional lawsuit seeking to declare the United National Movement, the Coalition for Change, Strong Georgia – Lelo, the Federalists and Gakharia for Georgia unconstitutional and ban their activities. The hearing began on 21 October.
