Georgian Parliament Speaker meets member of Politburo Standing Committee of CCP

The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has met with Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party and Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

The meeting noted the significant progress achieved in Georgian-Chinese relations in recent years.

According to the Georgian Parliament, special emphasis was placed on the Georgian Prime Minister’s 2023 visit to China, during which a joint statement was issued announcing the establishment of a strategic partnership.

Shalva Papuashvili stated that Georgia and China share a common commitment to protecting national sovereignty, peace, and security. Both countries firmly support the principles of international law, the strengthening of the international order, and the observance of equality and mutual respect in international relations.

The Chinese side reaffirmed its firm support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Both sides expressed their readiness to deepen relations between the two countries. It was noted that cooperation between Georgia and China holds considerable potential across all areas.

Attention was drawn to the development of inter-parliamentary ties, as well as to cooperation in the fields of trade and economics, tourism, education, innovation and culture.

Shalva Papuashvili emphasised that free trade plays a vital role in fostering closer cooperation.

Both sides underscored the importance of cooperation in connectivity, transport and logistics in today’s turbulent world. Georgia’s involvement in China’s Belt and Road Initiative was highlighted, along with the importance of further harnessing the Middle Corridor’s potential.

The meeting took place during Shalva Papuashvili’s official visit to the People’s Republic of China. The delegation, led by the Speaker of Parliament, comprises: First Deputy Speaker of the Georgian Parliament and Head of the Georgia-China Parliamentary Friendship Group Giorgi Volski; Deputy Speaker of Parliament Nino Tsilosani; Deputy Speaker of Parliament Sozar Subari; Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Nikoloz Samkharadze; and Chairman of the Agriculture Committee Gela Samkharauli.
