Georgian Defense Minister: Modern military force rooted in traditional values
“The Georgian Defence Forces embody a modern military force grounded in enduring traditional values,” stated Irakli Chikovani, Georgia’s Defence Minister, during a speech at the event commemorating the 34th anniversary of the Georgian Defence Forces in Vaziani.
Minister Chikovani reflected on the development and transformation of the armed forces, beginning on April 30, 1991, when thousands of young people—”filled with enthusiasm and pride”—enlisted in the National Guard.
He expressed gratitude to the soldiers for their vital contributions to the growth of the Georgian army and highlighted the significance of 117 service members who have served for over 30 years, representing “the living history of its evolution.”
Chikovani explained that, according to the 1995 Constitution, Georgia maintained an armed force that, during wartime, integrated with other military structures. Following the constitutional reform of 2018, a unified military structure was established, officially named the Georgian Defence Forces.
The Minister also emphasized the crucial role of international partners in providing equipment and training, and he extended his thanks to partner states for their ongoing efforts to bolster Georgia’s defence capabilities.
