Georgia tightens gambling business regulations from March 1

Effective March 1, 2022, Georgian citizens aged under 25 will be banned from gambling online and on gaming premises. The Georgian Parliament endorsed the relevant bill with eighty-two votes to one on Wednesday.

Gambling will also be restricted for several categories, including socially vulnerable persons receiving state assistance, public servants, National Bank of Georgia staff, individuals blacklisted by the court upon family request, and those applied to the Revenue Service to self-restrict from the gambling.

The bill also envisages hiking taxes and restricting advertising on TV, Georgian webpages, and outdoors. Only sponsorship agreements will be allowed.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili thanked the Parliament for passing the bill, saying “one million Georgian citizens will face the restriction.” PM said the sector would see 65-70% increased taxes in total. He also pledged that the control mechanisms would tighten from March 1.
