GD's Matikashvili: EU resembles Soviet Union, attempting to blackmail 61 nations—yet such threats are unlikely to materialize

“The European Union is increasingly resembling the Soviet Union; a clear example of this is its attempt to blackmail 61 countries,” stated David Matikashvili, a member of the parliamentary majority.

He expressed doubt that these threats would materialize.

“First and foremost, it is unlikely that these threats will come to fruition. The European Union is becoming more and more reminiscent of the Soviet Union, particularly in its efforts to coerce 61 nations. If any country fails to conform to the directives issued from Brussels, the EU will likely resort to this manipulative tactic. We need only to look at our recent past to recall which state employed baseless embargoes, sanctions, and deportations for its own purposes—this was Russia. Today, the European Union mirrors not only contemporary Russia but also the oppressive Soviet regime when it attempts to impose such decisions to intimidate the Georgian nation. This is particularly evident as Georgia strives to avoid becoming embroiled in the profound crisis it faces due to the war in Ukraine,” Matikashvili concluded.
