Gakharia for Georgia's Sichinava: Marta Kos’s statement means nothing; Georgia must become full EU member with complete voting rights
“The European Union may well face numerous challenges, but we must join it as full members. The EU is not demanding any concession of sovereignty from our country,” stated Berdia Sichinava, a member of the Gakharia For Georgia party.
According to Sichinava, Marta Kos’s statement about a potential restriction of veto rights for new EU member states is merely a floated hypothesis. He argued that the ruling Georgian Dream party must apologise on the international stage for its recent actions and do everything within its power to ensure Georgia secures full membership.
“This statement by Marta Kos means absolutely nothing; it is purely a hypothesis that has been put forward. The real issue is that Georgia must become a full member of the European Union and participate entirely in the decision-making process. That is our objective; we should be doing everything to achieve it.
Instead, what do we see? The current government is in hiding, staying silent, refusing to engage in the negotiation process, and hurling abuse at everyone. They have burned so many bridges internationally that they cannot even speak up now; they have completely exhausted their diplomatic capital.
Of course, the EU faces its own challenges, but we must enter it as full-fledged members. The EU does not demand that our country surrender its sovereignty; quite the opposite, the EU is the ultimate guarantor of our sovereignty.
Georgian Dream needs to stop burying its head in the sand like an ostrich. They need to pull their heads out, apologise for the rhetoric and the sheer nonsense they have perpetrated on the international stage, and get back to work. Frankly, I have absolutely no desire to be part of a union where we are not accepted as equals,” Berdia Sichinava stated.
Commenting on the statement made by MP Nikoloz Samkharadze, who noted that Georgia had “requested the Luxembourgish side to raise the issue with the European Commission regarding the resumption of dialogue,” Sichinava described Georgian Dream’s strategy as being “a coward abroad, but a tyrant at home.”
“What they say behind closed doors internationally is completely different from what they preach domestically. Their foreign policy rhetoric is meticulously engineered for the domestic population, creating a false impression that they are strongmen defending our national sovereignty. Yet, the moment they step onto foreign soil, they resort to begging for a way to stabilise relations.
They need to start being honest with their own citizens before they can dream of fixing relations with international partners. When you deceive your own citizens with one narrative while singing a completely different tune abroad, it is the textbook definition of being a coward abroad, but a tyrant at home,” Sichinava concluded.
