Gakharia for Georgia's Sharashidze: GD attempts to persuade people of Europe's hostility toward Georgia

“European partners call on Georgia to fulfil its internationally taken commitments in terms of democracy and supremacy of law, but Papuashvili calls it a hostile attitude,” said Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party.

According to Sharashidze, Europe pursues democracy and human rights in Georgia.

“Everyone, both in Georgia and abroad, agrees that the country demonstrates democracy backsliding. When Georgia joined the Council of Europe, it took commitments such as defending democracy, human rights, and upholding the supremacy of law. Papuashvili calls it a hostile attitude toward Georgia, and this is not true.

Even if we consider that the GD is correct, then why does it refuse to use this platform? Why does it avoid proving the truth? Because they cannot defend their own truth and the interests of the Georgian people when needed. They acknowledge that this fact-based criticism cannot be responded to. The only thing they can do is to convince the Georgian population, through their propagandist messages, that Europe is hostile toward Georgia and which is not true. The only thing that Europe wants from us is to pursue democracy in this country, to defend human rights and to hold free and fair elections,” he said.

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili announced today that taking into account the European Parliament’s “narrow-party attitude,” Georgia’s parliamentary permanent delegation will not participate in the next sessions of Euronest.

The Euronest Parliamentary Assembly on October 31 issued a Resolution on the future of the Eastern Partnership and the new prospects of the EU enlargement policy, which also draws attention to Georgia. It highlights recent developments in the country, indicating democratic backsliding.
