Gakharia for Georgia's Akubardia: Ivanishvili seeks Soviet-era one-party rule; vows to resist any return to past

Teona Akubardia, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party, stated that it is no secret that Bidzina Ivanishvili desires a political landscape reminiscent of the Soviet era, characterized by a single ruling party.

According to her, there will be firm resistance to ensure that Georgia does not revert to its Soviet past.

“This is not new; it has always been Bidzina Ivanishvili’s desire to return to a time when only one party held power, as was the case during the Soviet period. But why now? This correlates with the introduction of the MEGOBARI Act and the dashed hopes of the pivotal January 20 regarding our relations with the Trump administration. To some extent, this reflects the reaction following the MEGOBARI Act.

The fact that Mr Ivanishvili remains enamoured with the Soviet past, where a single party governed the nation, is certainly not a new development. This requires both skill and execution. We will be watching closely to see how adept they are in this regard. Make no mistake: we will resolutely resist any attempts to drag Georgia back to the Soviet era, a destination that Ivanishvili so clearly desires,” Akubardia declared.

Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Georgian Dream Executive Secretary, remarked on March 27 that, “the conclusions of the investigative commission will provide us with a solid foundation to approach the Constitutional Court regarding the designation of the United National Movement and its affiliates as unconstitutional.”
