GAA announces active construction of new runway at Kutaisi International Airport
The construction of a new 3.5 km runway, along with associated airfield infrastructure, at Kutaisi David Agmashenebeli International Airport is now in the active phase.
According to the Georgian Airports Association (GAA), this marks a historic milestone for independent Georgia, the first time that the construction of a new international runway and its supporting facilities is underway.
“The land excavation process is nearing completion, and simultaneously, works are progressing on the artificial surface. The runway extends over an area of 3,620 metres, where inert materials are being laid, the foundation is being prepared, and the construction of the artificial surface is underway at the initial stage,” the GAA reports.
Furthermore, work is also progressing on laying the foundation for the runway and installing the cement-concrete pavement on the aircraft parking apron. Also, new engineering and irrigation systems are being constructed across an area of approximately 17 km.
“The total investment in this project amounts to GEL 240 million. Once completed, the new runway and airfield infrastructure will enable Kutaisi International Airport to accommodate and service even the largest aircraft in the world. The Anagi construction firm carried out the project.
Following its completion, Kutaisi will boast Georgia’s first F-code airport, capable of handling large Category F aircraft without restrictions,” the GAA states.
