The unilateral recognition of breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is a violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and its internationally recognized borders, – says the statement released by the government of France on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of 2008 Georgia-Russia war.

“Ten years after the armed conflict between Georgia and Russia, France reaffirms its commitment to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and calls on Russia to fully comply with its obligations under the 12 August and 8 September, 2008 Agreements.

The unilateral recognition of the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is a violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and its internationally recognized borders,” the statement says.

The government of France explains that militarization of Georgia’s breakaway regions as well as interruption in the process of restoration of confidence between the population of these regions and other part of Georgia, is unacceptable and hinders the process of reconciliation of the citizens.

“France will continue to support a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Georgia in accordance with the fundamental principles of the international law in order to achieve fulfillment of the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008, “the statement reads.
