Former MP Gedevan Popkhadze launches hunger strike

Former parliament member Gedevan Popkhadze launched a hunger strike thus joining Droa party leader Elene Khoshtaria in her extreme form of protest.

Popkhadze believes that this protest will become the “centre of attraction for many.”

“I am joining Elene Khoshtaria in her protest and will launch a hunger strike from today. Cooperation with this regime in any form is impossible since it established an illegal repression system against individuals. It is an illegitimate state system, which serves the interests of one private individual.

If we do not counter this system with dedication, and steadfastness and leave any space for cooperation, we will betray those who are unlawfully imprisoned and the society which still hopes for a democratic, fair and European future.

I think this is the right form of fight. We should demonstrate to society that we adhere to the principal viewpoint – death or victory. I am joining Elene Khoshtaria from today. I don’t call on anybody to follow me but I believe that this protest will become the centre of attraction for many,” he said.

On June 27, Elene Khoshtaria, leader of the Droa party, announced the start of a hunger strike on Rustaveli Avenue, declaring her readiness to “sacrifice herself to the regime.”
