Forestry Department Head elected Bern Convention Chair

Strasbourg hosted the 45th session of the Council of Europe’s Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (1979), or Bern Convention.

According to the Georgian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry Department Head Karlo Amirgulashvili, who served as bureau vice-president from 2021, has been elected Chairman of the Bern Convention.

“Bern Convention is one of the most important international agreements in the field of environmental protection. The appointment of a Georgian representative to this post will contribute to Georgia’s active positioning in EU structures, effective fulfilment of commitments as per the Association Agreement, practice of the Convention and efficient implementation of the environment protection policy.

It is noteworthy that in order to ensure the implementation of the Convention, the Emerald Network was established in Georgia. As of 2023, the area of ​​the Emerald Network in Georgia is 1,307,501 hectares and comprises 66 territories. At this stage, management plans for the Emerald Network areas are being developed,” the Ministry said.
