Foreign Relations Committee Chair accuses opposition of deteriorating relations with EU

“Opposition is coquetting with society, pretending they work hard to improve Georgia-EU relations. However, it is obvious to society that the opposition had actively worked to deteriorate Georgia-EU relations, to suspend visa-free travel for Georgia, not to grant candidate status, and not to recognize the Georgian government,” said Nikoloz Samkharadze, Foreign Relations Committee Chair, in response to a reporter’s question.

Samkharadze was asked to respond to the question: “The Opposition Alliance received a response to its letter based on which the European Union remains a supporter of the Georgian people. However, if the Dream does not reverse the course, no dialogue will be held with the EU.”

“We also remember the letter, which the opposition sent to the EU following the 2024 elections, urging the imposition of sanctions on Georgia. Now their coquetry is worth nothing. I do not know if they want to score points in Brussels with this, but in Georgia, they will not achieve anything with such actions.

If the EU and Brussels support the Georgian people, which they reconfirm every day and has turned into a ritual, then they should hold a dialogue with the Georgian government elected by the Georgian people. Otherwise, this reminds me of the statements of our northern neighbor, Putin, who also says that he loves the Georgian people, but is unable to establish contact with the Georgian government and cannot agree on general principles.

Anyone who wants to be friends with the Georgian people and support them seeks relations with the Georgian government and respects Georgia’s national interests. All the rest is mere words and nothing else,” he said.

Nikoloz Samkharadze responded to the second question: “There was an immediate response from the European Union to the opposition’s letter, but the European Union is silent on the letters from the ruling team. How do you assess this fact?”

Samkharadze noted that everything is clear to Georgian society, who serves what interests and who is fighting for what.

“The EU, at least Brussels, has a stated policy that they do not have a dialogue with Georgia at the highest level. Accordingly, they are following this line. The opposition is an internal stronghold for them, through which they sometimes convey their messages. Therefore, everything is clear to Georgian society, who serves what interest and who is fighting for what,” he said.
