We have obtained firm arguments to talk about Davit Gareji within the framework of Georgia-Azerbaijan joint commission the work of which will continue and I am sure the decision will be made in bilaterally acceptable forms and frames – Davit Zalkaliani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia said in response to a question about Davit Gareji monastery complex.

Zalkaliani said that Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan had recently visited Georgia and all issues of bilateral relations including about Davit Gareji and delimitation of the border had been discussed during the meeting.

According to Zalkaliani, Davit Gareji issue has remained disputable inheritably for 25 years and has remained unresolved in acceptable forms for both sides.

“I tried to be very precise in assessments so that the issue could not be used for political manipulations, since the issue is very sensitive due to the existing relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan,” Zalkaliani said.

Foreign Minister said that he had reiterated the readiness of the Georgian government to resume negotiations within the framework of the Commission, which worked every day despite COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have obtained important and supplementary resources, including cartography maps and expertise conclusions. Due to the new circumstances, it is not ruled out that certain questions arise regarding 2006-2007 agreements. Unfortunately, the flow of misinformation followed on part of the oppositional parties that is absolutely ungrounded,” Zalkaliani said.

Foreign Minister underlined that the statements of the opposition were anti-state and represented merely an irresponsible attitude towards a very sensitive issue.
