For Georgia’s MP Giorgi Sharashidze: Sooner or later, Georgian Dream will face severe reckoning for its actions

“I want to tell Georgian Dream that banning political parties is a completely illegal, unconstitutional act that will bring catastrophic consequences for them,” MP Giorgi Sharashidze of the Gakharia for Georgia party has declared.

According to him, the premature resignation of Constitutional Court Judge Manana Kobakhidze serves as direct proof that Georgian Dream has already decided to ban opposition parties.

“They will force the Constitutional Court to deliver a completely unconstitutional ruling. The Constitutional Court’s sole remaining function is to rubber-stamp decisions made within Georgian Dream, effectively reducing it to a notary office under Georgian Dream. As for our political force, nothing unexpected has happened; we have endured worse. I want to tell Georgian Dream that this completely illegal and unconstitutional action will bring catastrophic consequences specifically for them. Sooner or later, and that time is not far off, Georgian Dream will face a very severe reckoning for what it is doing, starting with the 88 MPs who signed the lawsuit and ending with every actor involved in this process. Adding our party to this list will bring catastrophic consequences for Georgian Dream, proving once again that this is a continuation of the physical assault, political persecution, and political vengeance launched against Giorgi Gakharia,” Giorgi Sharashidze stated.

According to him, Georgian Dream is preparing to transition from authoritarianism to an outright dictatorship, arguing that the decision to ban opposition parties—should the Constitutional Court approve it—will completely wipe out dissenting voices in the country.

“Georgian Dream is declaring dissenting opinion unconstitutional, alongside the constitutional right guaranteed to Georgian citizens to choose their preferred political force. They are stripping Georgian citizens of this right, their voting rights. This is a direct departure from the constitutional framework. It appears Georgian Dream was not satisfied with violating Article 78 and is now fundamentally refusing to uphold the core principles enshrined in the Constitution: the principle that the people are the source of authority, and that Georgian citizens have the right to express dissenting opinions, choose their preferred political party, and temporarily grant it representative authority. By adding our political party to this list in particular, I want to reiterate that Georgian Dream will face catastrophic consequences,” Giorgi Sharashidze said.
