For Georgia's Khvedeliani: GD ready to persecute its leading political opponent

“The Prosecutor’s Office’s statement came as no surprise. Georgian Dream is ready, even if it means sacrificing national interests, to persecute its most significant political opponent, Giorgi Gakharia,” stated Tata Khvedeliani, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party.

According to him, the individual actively opposing Georgian Dream is Giorgi Gakharia and his team.

“The statement from the Prosecutor’s Office was not unexpected for our political team. Georgian Dream is ready, even at the expense of the nation’s interests, to pursue its most formidable political rival, Giorgi Gakharia. It is nothing more than a continuation of a personal vendetta that was declared before the 2024 elections. We anticipate many more absurd accusations aimed at Gakharia. This is the reality that Georgian Dream has created, politically persecuting its primary opponent.

We have seen numerous instances where they supported and were proud of Gakharia’s actions on various projects. Yet, once they felt uncomfortable with him, they turned against him. Today, the individuals fighting against Georgian Dream are Giorgi Gakharia and his team, while the GD government is resorting to using United National Movement as a tool against the country,” Khvedeliani remarked.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has initiated criminal proceedings against former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. As Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze stated during a briefing, the case concerns events of June 20-21, 2019, and the incident at Chorchana checkpoint. Gakharia is charged under Articles 25, 117, Part 3, Subparagraph “m,” and Article 333, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. These charges carry a potential sentence of up to 13 years in prison. The Prosecutor’s Office intends to file a motion with the Tbilisi City Court to seek pre-trial detention for Gakharia within the legal timeframe.
