FM: Shameful to accuse Georgia of lying regarding Ukraine; Georgia has always supported Ukraine
“It’s shameful when anyone accuses Georgia of lying about something regarding Ukraine. Since February 2022, Georgia has consistently demonstrated its political support for Ukraine. Ukraine can always count on Georgia’s backing,” Georgia’s Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili told journalists.
According to the Foreign Minister, no one can claim that Georgia has failed to support Ukraine in any international forums.
“The conclusions made in the European Commission’s report are completely divorced from the actual facts. It’s shameful when anyone accuses Georgia of lying about something regarding Ukraine. Since February 2022, Georgia has consistently demonstrated its political support for Ukraine. Ukraine can always count on Georgia’s backing. It has never been the case; no one can claim that Georgia has failed to support Ukraine in any international forums. It is our clearly defined policy, and every EU member state adheres to the same stance; moreover, NATO member states share this approach. No one wishes to engage in confrontation with Russia or create additional security challenges. This is entirely understandable. The government’s primary duty is to protect the country from threats. This is our obligation, and if we fulfil this, it should not be condemned but rather welcomed,” stated the Foreign Minister.
Maka Botchorishvili also spoke about obstructive steps taken by the Ukrainian government on Georgia’s path to European integration. As the Foreign Minister noted, Ukraine is not an EU member and cannot have any say in Georgia’s EU integration process.
“Georgia’s path to EU integration and the process of obtaining candidate status were somehow accompanied by Ukraine’s negative attitude, which was that Georgia should not receive candidate status. We have witnessed firsthand the character of the campaigns carried out in 2022-2023, prior to Georgia obtaining candidate status. Ukraine’s involvement in this matter has occurred multiple times, and it is evident that they have opposed Georgia’s European integration through various means. This was not hidden; we all know it. Ukraine is not a member of the EU today and, therefore, cannot have any influence over Georgia’s process of European Union integration,” stated the Foreign Minister.
