FM highlights EU recognition for Georgia’s commitment to upholding sanctions, preventing circumvention

“We recently received a letter of appreciation from the European Union, recognising how well Georgia is adhering to its commitments and the conscientious manner in which we are executing all activities to ensure that Georgia is not exploited to circumvent sanctions,” Maka Botchorishvili, the Georgian Foreign Minister, told journalists.

According to Botchorishvili, unfounded accusations against Georgia often originate from countries “where there are numerous developments related to the circumvention of sanctions.”

“Georgia frequently becomes the target of noise and criticism, especially from the Baltic states, with persistent attempts to portray our country solely in a negative light. We have repeatedly seen harsh attacks on Georgia whenever issues concerning sanctions implementation and our country’s role in this process are discussed.

Recently, the European Union sent a letter of appreciation, recognising Georgia’s effective cooperation and conscientious efforts in preventing sanctions circumvention. Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that many of the countries from which these baseless accusations originate are themselves involved in activities related to bypassing sanctions.

Of course, it is unfortunate when Georgia becomes the target of attacks by these countries, highlighting once again the importance of approaching all perspectives and attitudes towards Georgia with objectivity. Regrettably, the very countries engaging in such actions themselves are among those opposing Georgia,” said Maka Bochorishvili.
