FM: Enlargement cannot be one-sided; Any talk about enlargement without the country concerned is meaningless
“We have an impression that the meeting is organized solely with the purpose of not inviting Georgia and creating a one-day agenda inside the country and to speak about it,” said Maka Botchorishvili, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Botchorishvili was asked to comment on the meeting of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on enlargement scheduled for June 24.
“The European Parliament often holds meetings to review such issues as enlargement and connectivity without inviting Georgia. We have an impression that the meeting is organized solely with the purpose of not inviting Georgia and creating a one-day agenda inside the country, and to speak about it. This is simply not interesting. There are more significant events and processes taking place globally and in our region to follow.
The discussion on enlargement will only make sense if we have some influence on the enlargement process. This has never been the case, and we see that certain attitudes are changing. This is an interesting process to follow. However, how the enlargement process unfolds will cause many questions. It is up to the EU to decide if Georgia is involved in the process or not.
Enlargement cannot be one-sided, either for the EP or Georgia. This is always a two-sided process and means participation of both sides. Therefore, any talk about enlargement without the country concerned is meaningless. Let them decide for themselves how meaningful discussions are when the party that is directly involved in the process does not participate,” she said.
