FM: 2008 Bucharest Summit decision not to revise
The decision of the 2008 NATO Bucharest Summit will not revise, said David Zalkaliani, Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs. Georgian FM deems Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement as unacceptable.
“NATO is a unique organization, which is based on principles and its regulations. Therefore, not a single third party has the right to meddle in the decision about NATO enlargement. The decision of the Bucharest Summit made in 2008 will not revise or reconsider. This is clear and obvious. Our NATO allies speak about that.
At the same time, a country, which aspires at NATO and meets all the criteria, NATO door is opened for it and this is up to the NATO and that country. In this case, this has to be decided by NATO and Georgia,” Zalkaliani said.
Foreign Minister added that all countries have the right to decide about their won security alliances and this is also signed by Russia.
“Any statement made by a third party regarding the revision of the Bucharest Summit decision, which is contrary to the fundamental principles and norms of international law, is unacceptable to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Georgian Foreign Ministry said in the statement.
Foreign Ministry claims that Russia’s moves challenge the European and Euro-Atlantic security architecture that is represented by occupation and annexation of neighbor countries’ territories and Russia’s un-fulfillment of the internationally taken commitments.
On December 10, Russian Foreign Ministry urged for annulling the 2008 NATO Bucharest Summit decision which says that Georgia and Ukraine will become NATO members.
