“The Georgian people do deserve a future based on freedom and those values they have chosen for themselves. Unfortunately, the current government is not representing them,” said Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

Elina Valtonen reaffirmed Finland’s support for the Georgian people and expressed hope for a better future.

“Russia has been occupying territories in Georgia since 2008. It’s been almost twenty years, and certainly, again, the Georgian people do deserve a future based on freedom and those values they have chosen for themselves, and unfortunately, the current government is not representing them.

We have backed Georgians and hope that there might be a future. Let’s work for it together in the very near term, so that both the Georgian government will work more in an engaged manner towards the liberties of their people. But at the same time, you know, show that Georgia is an independent, sovereign country, and does not want to see the Russian existence or presence in the territory,” said Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.
