Federalist’s Chergoleishvili highlights regime change and Trump’s NATO stance as key objectives

“The issues surrounding NATO enlargement are familiar from the 2008 Bucharest summit, and Trump’s statements offer nothing new. However, there’s a difference between what Trump says and what is actually beneficial for us,” remarked Tamar Chergoleishvili, one of the founders of the Federalists Party, commenting on U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg’s recent statements.

Chergoleishvili emphasized that Georgia’s aspiration to join NATO remains unwavering, regardless of the opinions of the so-called leader of the free world.

“Russia is bargaining with our sovereignty; no one is naive. Everyone in Russia knows NATO will not attack Russia. Yet, as soon as Georgia joins NATO, Russia will not deny Georgia or Ukraine their sovereignty. That’s why Russia opposes their strengthening sovereignty,” she said.

Chergoleishvili reiterated that the concerns over NATO enlargement have been consistent since the 2008 Bucharest summit, and Trump’s remarks do not bring anything new.

“One thing is what Trump says, and another is what actually benefits us. Our goal remains NATO integration, regardless of the views of the leader of the free world. The free world is free because leadership and opinions change over time. Many promises in international politics are later broken, so I see no problem with this promise,” Chergoleishvili stated.

Chergoleishvili also called for regime change in Georgia, asserting that only then can a new government work toward influencing Trump’s stance on NATO enlargement.

“Our current government, which celebrates protocol congratulations and hails them as successes, has exhausted its capacity to advocate for Georgia’s national interests elsewhere. Our primary goal must be to change the regime and then actively pursue a shift in Trump’s position on NATO enlargement. This is a process. Trump may promise many things to Putin, but what Putin will actually do is another matter entirely. Therefore, we must always remain vigilant regarding Putin’s intentions,” she warned.

In an interview with ABC News, U.S. special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, discussed the ongoing cease-fire negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. He reconfirmed President Donald Trump’s readiness to negotiate over one of Russia’s conditions, asking Western leaders to pledge in writing that NATO would not expand eastward, saying: “This is not only about Ukraine. We are talking about Georgia and Moldova. We say that we can comprehensively stop the expansion of NATO close to your borders,” he said.
