Experts to study Pompey Bridge in Mtskheta

Georgian Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, Tea Tsulukiani, visited the so-called Pompey Bridge in Mskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia.

Expert began studying the bridge at the Ministry initiative upon the request of locals. The bridge has been covered with water since the construction of Zemo Avchala HPP in 1927. With the mediation of Culture Ministry, Energo-Pro Company discharged the water and allowed the specialists to the territory.

The Pompey Bridge was built in 1th century B.C. It played an important role in the trade development in this territory, according to the historical chronicles by the Roman historians Strabo, Pliny and Lucius Cassius Dio.

In 1927, after the HPP was built, the bridge was submerged. It may be seen only when the water level of Mtkvari River is lower in Mtskheta. Due to its historical significance and numerous ancient monuments, the “Historical Monuments of Mtskheta” became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
