Ex-president’s lawyer uncertain over admission of Polish experts

Jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s lawyer Shalva Khachapuridze said he did not exclude non-admission of Polish experts to his defendant.

He claimed that the issue was linked to the demarche letter submitted to the Justice Ministry on behalf of the EU 27 member states.

Khachapuridze responded to the statement of Justice Ministry, which denied that admission of Polish experts had been agreed during the meeting of Justice Minister Rati Bregadze with Ambassadors of the EU countries.

The ex-president’s lawyer said that Polish experts planned to arrive in Georgia. However, the Vivamedi Clinic had no such information as yet. He recalled the visit of American experts, who waited for hours to be admitted to the patient.

“We will see what happens. We and the EU are working in this direction,” Khachapuridze said.

EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski and Swedish Ambassador Ulrik Tideström on February 27  delivered a formal demarche to Justice Minister Rati Bregadze concerning jailed ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili. Herczynski said the EU member states “are very concerned about reports of Saakashvili’s deteriorating health.”

Mikheil Saakashvili has been in jail for over a year, convicted of abuse of power while in office. He is placed at the Vivamedi Clinic due to deteriorating health state.
