Education Minister: Georgia ranks first among 91 nations for progress in science in latest PISA study

“The publication of the 2025 PISA study results brings us extraordinarily encouraging news. The data demonstrates that Georgia has made solid progress over the past decade across all three assessment areas: mathematics, reading, and science,” stated Minister of Education, Science, and Youth Givi Mikanadze.

According to the Minister, Georgia ranks first among 91 participating nations in score improvement in science.

Mikanadze highlighted that despite a global downward trend in educational attainment across all three subjects, Georgia has maintained a steady trajectory of improvement and positive momentum, defying the broader international decline.

“This progress underscores the profound impact of our ongoing educational reforms and the dedicated efforts of every teacher and school administrator involved in the process.

It is particularly noteworthy that since Georgia’s initial participation in the international PISA assessments in 2010, the country has never recorded progress on this scale. While 81 countries took part in the 2022 evaluation, 91 nations participated in the 2025 study, making Georgia’s achievements all the more remarkable.

Furthermore, we are seeing significant convergence between urban and rural student outcomes, driven primarily by marked improvements among rural pupils in mathematics and science. The study also revealed that socio-economic status no longer exerts a decisive influence on student achievement, an unequivocally positive indicator for educational equity. We are especially pleased that students overwhelmingly rate their school environment in a highly positive light,” Mikanadze noted.

According to official information from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Youth, the newly published Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025 results show that compared to 2022, Georgia improved its performance across all core domains, recording its strongest decade-long results to date in mathematics and science.
