European Integration Chair: Euronest resolution is detached from reality

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration, Levan Makhashvili, criticized the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly’s resolution on Georgia, calling it “completely out of touch with reality.”

According to Makhashvili, certain political groups within the European Parliament are deliberately trying to damage Georgia’s interests.

“The Euronest resolution is entirely detached from reality. This is part of a narrow political agenda. The goal of the political groups that make up these MEPs is to harm Georgia’s interests wherever they can – in the European Parliament, PACE, or elsewhere. We have concrete evidence and arguments in response to this,” said Makhashvili.

He added that the Georgian delegation did not attend the Euronest session in Yerevan because the process was “unfair” and participation would have been “irrelevant.”

“Several parties whose ban we have requested from the Constitutional Court are members of their political family. They are engaged in sabotage against the country and continue this wherever possible,” he noted.

The Euronest Parliamentary Assembly on October 31 issued a Resolution on the future of the Eastern Partnership and the new prospects of the EU enlargement policy, which also draws attention to Georgia. It highlights recent developments in the country, indicating democratic backsliding.

The ruling Georgian Dream party boycotted the session, with Makhashvili explaining in an open letter that Euronest’s recent actions contradict the principles of its Founding Act and the Joint Declaration of the Prague Eastern Partnership Summit.

Additionally, the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, stated: “The Euronest session is being held in the South Caucasus region, yet Georgia and Azerbaijan are not participating. This suggests that something is amiss in the behaviour of the European Parliament.” He further explained that, “in reality, under the guise of ‘NGOs, members of the United National Movement, Lelo, European Georgia, and Droa parties have been invited.”
