EU Integration Committee Chair: We are ready to cooperate with the EU's relevant structures in business-like manner; Political blackmail continues but with a confused address
“The suspension of visa-free travel for the Georgian population is not feasible in the coming years, taking into account the mood in the EU member states,” said Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the EU Integration Committee.
Levan Makhashvili hopes that the EU will make rational and pragmatic decisions without committing yet another geopolitical mistake.
“It concerns objective criteria, management of migration and security. Wherever possible, we will take steps in all directions to fulfil our commitments not to harm the country’s economy. We were ready, are ready and will be ready to cooperate with the EU’s relevant structures in a business-like manner. Political blackmail stands, but the address is confused. The suspension of visa-free travel for the Georgian population is unlikely in the next years, taking into account the mood in EU member states.
As for Ukraine and Moldova, nothing surprises me. When the artificial, political goal is to harm a country, all arguments are built around that, and sometimes unfair assessments are made. On the other hand, others are being whitewashed so that they don’t make other decisions, because in practice, what would happen if they talked about the human rights situation and corruption in one country or another? Then they would make respective decisions. This is a political goal today. We observe double standards. If the goal is political, you can ignore the facts and make a different decision.
Regrettably, we have been observing this for a long time. I hope the EU will make rational and pragmatic decisions and will not commit yet another geopolitical mistake. It would be a theoretically rigid decision for the European Union to completely renounce the Caucasus, the entire region,” he said.
