EU Integration Committee Chair says April 9 belongs to everyone, all generations
“If anything is dear and valuable for our country and society, it is today’s date, April 9, a tragedy in our country’s history, when a foreign force, the Soviet Union, Russia suppressed our people’s and society’s spirit to aspire for independence and freedom,” said Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the parliamentary EU Integration Committee.
According to Levan Makhashvili, this day belongs to everyone, the nation and clergy, people of all generations, and space at the April 9 Memorial could be found for all.
“That is why hate speech, extremism what we have seen at the April 9 Memorial is regrettable. This is what our ancestors and April 9 heroes fought for. This is the future that our generation sees for our country. We wish to observe such important events together. Unlike many countries, Georgia gained this independence with blood. Due to this tragic experience, we think twice about every step to be taken not to return to the tragic past.
We should rationally pass through each tense and hard historical period to value the heroic deeds of those who spilt blood on April 9. Everyone has the right to pay tribute to these heroes. This is the place for everyone instead of being the site for irrational and meaningless shows. Whether they acknowledge it or not, this underlines their priorities and interests. Foreign countries are their core points and priorities,” he said.
