EU Integration Committee Chair expresses concern over bureaucrats issuing directives to high-ranking EU officials

“We are closely monitoring the statements made by European bureaucrats attempting to influence and direct high-ranking EU officials, and this is indeed concerning,” stated Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the EU Integration Committee.

Makhashvili expressed that European bureaucrats exhibit a similar mindset towards third countries. He asserted that the EU should “adhere to its competencies while respecting the sovereignty and exclusive rights of member states to make their own decisions, independent of Brussels’ bureaucracy.”

“The time will come when we must address these issues, ensuring that member states can articulate their visions for their national development without opposition from bureaucratic conceptions that seek to pressure and influence them. The statements we have witnessed are troubling, and I hope this will pave the way for a serious discussion on how the EU envisions its future,” Levan Makhashvili told the GPB’s First Channel.

Recently, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico took to social media to advocate for a discussion within the EU regarding the essence of democracy. He cited recent events in Romania and France surrounding presidential elections, as well as the “Maidans” allegedly orchestrated by the West in Georgia and Serbia, declaring: “No one can dictate to me where I can or cannot travel.”

Fico’s comments echoed the sentiments of Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission, who had urged leaders to boycott Moscow’s May 9 celebrations in support of Ukraine.

“Any participation in the May 9 parades or celebrations in Moscow will not be taken lightly in Europe, especially considering that Russia is currently waging a full-scale war in Europe,” Kallas informed reporters in Luxembourg following a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
