EU Ambassadors - We urge transparent, swift and conclusive investigations into possible excessive use of force on 20 June
“We urge transparent, swift and conclusive investigations into possible excessive use of force on 20 June and any actions inciting violence leading up to police response. Involvement of Public Defender is vital. We again call on all sides to prioritise dialogue and compromise,” reads the statement of EU ambassadors.
The statement was posted on the facebook page of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Georgia.
The protests erupted on June 20 in front of the parliament building in Tbilisi in reaction to the fact when the Georgian parliament Sergey Gavrilov, MP of the Russian State Duma, led the inter-parliamentary Orthodox assembly at the Georgian parliament from the chairman’s seat.
The protest rally was dispersed by the riot police with the use of tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon. About 240 people both civilians and law enforcers were injured during the dispersal of the protest.
