GD Chair: Ruling team complies with content of document

“Georgian Dream has expressed its will to forgive Nika Melia (UNM Chair) for the gravest crime he committed in June 2019. It is our political decision, and the rest depends on Nika Melia,” said Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

According to the GD Chairman, the ruling team complies with the text and content of the document proposed by  European Council President Charles Michel.

“Georgian Dream has expressed its will to forgive Nika Melia for the gravest crime he committed in June 2019. It is our political decision, and the rest depends on Nika Melia. We comply with the text and content of the document, explained by Ambassadors and Christian Danielsson. These explanations concerned the amnesty initiative. According to this content, the amnesty should apply to all those against whom a criminal case has been or may be initiated. On the night of June 20, Nika Melia committed the gravest crime. Therefore, if the amnesty applies to Nika Melia, it should apply to all others who may have committed a crime during these events”, Irakli Kobakhidze said.

The Georgian political parties signed A way ahead for Georgia, a compromise document submitted to the parties by the European Council President Charles Michel, at the Orbeliani Palace on April 19.

Charles Michel’s new proposal implies electoral and justice reforms, offers a pardon for all violations and convictions stemming from the 19-21 June 2019 protests and the conduct of repeat parliamentary elections in 2022 if the ruling Georgian Dream party fails to receive at least 43 % of votes in upcoming municipal elections. Also, within 2 weeks following signing the agreement, the sides have to discuss politically motivated cases.
