EU Ambassador: My message to people of Georgia is do not lose hope, your voice is being heard

“My message to the people of Georgia who are standing on the streets every night, not only in Tbilisi, but many other cities, is do not lose hope. Your voice is being heard,” EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski said on Monday.

According to the EU Ambassador, “It is shocking that there is so much violence, that there is so much brutality against many of them, against women, against young people.”

“This morning, I met with human rights defenders. They were describing horrific, shocking scenes of brutality, of people being abused after being arrested. According to them, this amounts to a torture. These cases should be investigated and the perpetrators should be brought to justice. It’s really deplorable that the police, the Secret Service, and some gangs of criminals who were rampant on the streets of Tbilisi two nights ago that still no one has been brought to justice.

Freedom of assembly, freedom of expression are absolutely basic principles of any democratic country – there are principles upon which European Union is built. This is why we condemn the ongoing violence on the streets of Tbilisi and other cities, it is absolutely unacceptable, especially it is unacceptable when it is directed at media representatives.

Any media representatives should be allowed to carry on their duty, their job freely. I’m personally really shocked that many young people have been beaten, brutally beaten for waving Georgian flags. This is truly heartbreaking, and I sincerely hope that this unparalleled level of violence will stop immediately,” he stated.
