EP President: Our hope is that we don't continue to go around in circles
“European Parliament (EP) has been one of the staunchest and most vocal supporters of EU enlargement and with that, the EU future of the Western Balkan,” said Roberta Metsola, EP President, ahead of the European Council’s meeting on 14-15 December.
Metsola went on to say that the EP welcomed the European Commission’s recommendation for Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. “We will welcome and continue to urge further steps.”
“For us, the EU enlargement has been one of the most successful and powerful tools. It is a win-win for everybody. We have seen that in the past. Our hope today is that we don’t continue to go around in circles because if we give hope, it has to be matched by tangible and concrete deliverables, otherwise, first of all, it will evaporate and secondly, the void will be filled by those who want to fuel instability in our immediate neighborhood. None of us wants that. We will send the most clear messages today and tomorrow at the European Council when we talk about enlargement,” she told reporters on Wednesday.
