ECHR judgment confirms superior human rights protection in Georgia, Justice Minister says

Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze remarked on the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision in the case of Makarashvili and others v Georgia.

Rati Bregvadze claims that the ruling upholds Georgia’s “high-quality” protection of human rights, which is “in accordance with European norms.”

He promised that the government would continue to strike a fair balance between concerns about national security and human rights.

The Justice Minister added that “we are certain that the actions of both the police and any other government official will continue to be extremely accurate by taking human rights into consideration, and a suitable balance will be maintained between human rights, dignity, and state security issues.”

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) delivered the judgment in the case of Makarashvili and others v. Georgia. The ECHR assessed the obstruction of Georgian Parliament building entrances by civic activists during the November 18, 2019 demonstration as “reprehensible” conduct.
