EBRD's Alkis Drakinos: Middle Corridor is vital initiative with Georgia at its heart, connecting Asia and Europe

Alkis Drakinos, Regional Head of the Caucasus for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), described the Middle Corridor as a remarkable initiative, emphasising Georgia’s central role. He highlighted the Caucasus as a crucial link in connecting Asia and Europe, and expressed the bank’s keen interest in engaging fully with all aspects of this process.

When asked how the potential of the Middle Corridor could be further enhanced, Alkis Drakinos responded:

“The Middle Corridor is a great concept. It’s a great initiative, and Georgia is in the middle of it. The whole Caucasus has a crucial role to play in connecting Asia with Europe, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is very much interested in getting involved in all the processes, all the discussions and all the project exploratory discussions on exploring how we can make this Middle Corridor a viable way to connect Europe with Asia.

We have already been active in all countries that are part of the Middle Corridor from Central Asia to the Caucasus. And if we are talking about Georgia, we have already invested in railway projects, in road projects, and in studies that make the port system more efficient.

We stand ready to support any opportunity that makes sense. We are participating here to learn from others and contribute. I’m looking at it as an overarching theme that will bring prosperity and peace prospects to the wider region as well,” stated Alkis Drakinos, Regional Head of the Caucasus for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
