Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs – Police acted in accordance with law in Pankisi Gorge

Police acted in accordance with the law in Pankisi Gorge – Natia Mezvrishvili, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs said.

According to Mezvrishvili, the processes in Pankisi Gorge are sensitive. She said that showing stones was not justified and investigative activities were ongoing to determine if law-enforcers exceeded their authority.

Mezvrishvili explained that police were present in the region to protect the security of locals and deployment of Special Task Unit became necessary after locals clashed with the police physically.

“Speaking about conspiracy theory will be wrong especially through TV stations and without pieces of evidence,” she said. Mezvrishvili claimed that the police acted worthily and legal norms were not violated.

Locals of Pankisi Gorge who are protesting against the construction of a hydro-electric power plant in the region clashed with the Special Task Squad on April 22 twice. About 40 people were injured.
