Defense and Security Committee Chair: Georgia committed to European security, safety principles

“Georgia is an ally of the European Union and a key security partner in the turbulent region,” said Chairman of the Defense and Security Committee, Irakli Beraia at the EU Inter-Parliamentary Conference on the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP).

According to Beraia, Georgia supports and is committed to the principles of security and safety in Europe and stands with partners in the process of ensuring international peace and stability. Georgia makes an important contribution to EU crisis management operations.

“Taking into account our common values, our experience, readiness and the deteriorating security environment, we believe that our close partnership in the field of security should be further enhanced,” he said.

Irakli Beraia also expressed readiness for close cooperation with the EU in order to implement the strategic priorities, including within the framework of the EU-NATO dialogue, participation in PESCO and steps to strengthen common resilience.

“We attach great importance to the role of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia in maintaining peace and stability along the occupation line, and we fully share the spirit that the enhanced missions of the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) should provide for timely adaptation to new threats and strengthen their effectiveness, especially in the new security context.

I emphasize that constant and increasing pressure should be applied to Russia in order for it to allow the EU monitoring mission in the occupied regions without interruption and to fulfill the six-point ceasefire agreement reached through the mediation of the European Union,” he said.

The Georgian delegation led by the Chairperson of the European Integration Committee, Maka Bochorishvili, was invited to the conference for the first time by the Presidency of the European Union, Sweden and the Presidential Trio.
