At a sitting of the Culture Committee, Vasil Maghlaperidze, Chairman of the Georgian Public Broadcaster’s Board of Trustees, presented the 2025 annual reports of two public law entities: the Georgian Public Broadcaster and the Adjara Television and Radio Public Broadcaster.
The presenter noted that 2025 was a particularly significant year, as it marked the centenary of radio broadcasting in Georgia.
“In 2025, Georgian Radio turned one hundred years old, and the radio channel ‘Georgian Radio’ was granted the status of an intangible cultural heritage monument. It is symbolic that in that very same year, following the completion of a five-year construction process, the First Channel began broadcasting from its new buildings, which were equipped with modern technology and apparatus, opening up new possibilities for the launch of a range of thematic projects,” said Vasil Maghlaperidze.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees also highlighted another landmark event of 2025: the hosting of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. He noted that the children’s competition held in Tbilisi received one of the highest ratings of any contest staged in a European country.
Speaking about new projects launched during the reporting period, Maghlaperidze noted that in 2025 the Public Broadcaster ventured into television film production for the first time, gaining valuable experience in the process; experience that, he said, will develop into an enduring tradition in the future.
He also noted that the broadcasting of both sports and cultural-educational programmes continued actively throughout 2025, bringing a wide range of content to Georgian audiences.
Turning to the Adjara Public Broadcaster, Maghlaperidze confirmed that a decision has been made to build a new facility for the television service. Within two years, the broadcaster will welcome viewers from modern premises, featuring modern technical equipment and a more diverse, enriched programme lineup.
The discussion of the Georgian Public Broadcaster’s report continued in a question-and-answer format.
The Culture Committee assessed the report positively and took a note of it.
“Significant steps have been taken in terms of the Public Broadcaster’s development, and it has been equipped with modern technical resources. The broadcaster has every opportunity and condition necessary to carry forward with distinction the long-standing traditions for which it has always been known, and to offer the public many more engaging projects in the years ahead,” said Committee Chairman Giorgi Gabunia.
