Court imposes 50,000 GEL-bail on Giorgi Vashadze for failing to appear before investigative commission

Tbilisi City Court has imposed a bail of 50,000 GEL on the leader of Strategy Aghmashenebeli, Giorgi Vashadze, for failing to appear before a temporary investigative commission.

Giorgi Vashadze informed the media that he will talk with his team members before deciding whether to pay the mandated amount.

“This body [the investigative commission] is illegitimate not just because it was established by an illegal parliament, but also because it is an unconstitutional, incomprehensible collection of people who have the compulsive belief that they are a commission and can do anything. I tell them, you have very little time left, justice will prevail, and we will undoubtedly win,” Giorgi Vashadze stated.

The pre-trial hearing is slated for May 27 at 12:00 p.m.

Giorgi Vashadze was called before the commission on April 15, but did not attend the meeting. Vashadze has been prosecuted under Article 349 of the Criminal Code, which states, “failure to comply with the request of the temporary investigative commission of the Parliament of Georgia.” This offence carries a fine or imprisonment for up to one year, as well as a three-year ban on holding office or engaging in activities.
