The opposition factions Charles Michel Reform Group and Lelo-Partnership for Georgia have signed an inter-factional parliamentary memorandum on NATO membership.

MPs believe it is necessary to create a targeted international parliamentary platform to undertake joint efforts towards joining the North Atlantic Alliance. They say they will spare no effort to keep this issue high on the NATO agenda.

“Georgia and Ukraine have decided to join NATO for strengthening national security and democracy. The Constitutions of both countries reflect the Euro-Atlantic aspirations. Both countries received a promise at Bucharest Summit that they would become NATO members.

We strongly believe that the NATO membership of Georgia and Ukraine is essential for the allies’ security in the Black Sea region. NATO prioritizing regional dynamics in enlargement reinforces our belief.

We believe that it is necessary to create a targeted international parliamentary platform to undertake joint efforts towards NATO membership,” the statement by the factions reads.

The oppositional factions plan to take the following measures, including developing a joint action plan at the parliamentary level, launching national discussions and exercising parliamentary oversight on the executive to ensure that NATO standards are met.

“We will spare no effort to ensure that the issue of Georgia and Ukraine’s NATO membership stands on the agenda of high-level NATO meetings,” the statement notes.
