Carl Hartzell: Widely accepted agreement is a good scenario for negotiations

We work with both sides to find a common magic position, – EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell told the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) in connection with the negotiations process between the ruling Georgian Dream Party and the opposition.

According to Hartzell, a widely accepted agreement is a good scenario for negotiations.

“I think the negotiations will be very important and difficult because both sides will have to facilitate this common position and help each other to get a good result. This is fundamental because there is only one good scenario for these negotiations – a widely accepted agreement. I think all other scenarios will be much more complicated.

I hope we will have an agreement as widely accepted as possible that will make this parliament work. I believe it is very important. The parliament should do important work, including addressing the shortcomings, identified during the election, through ambitious electoral reform. We know COVID and other challenges should be resolved through joint work in the Parliament. This is my humble hope and what makes me sleepless at night, ” – Carl Hartzell told GPB.

Nine opposition parties that passed a 1% threshold to enter the new Georgian parliament refused to recognize the October 31 parliamentary election results, calling them rigged. The U.S. and EU Ambassadors to Georgia are facilitating the negotiations between the ruling Georgian Dream Party and the opposition, though the first two rounds ended in no promising results.
